As mentioned in my recent post “Celebrating my Grandparents for the 4th of July!”, my grandma and grandpa are very active.
This summer, my grandma is taking the South by storm and visiting family over a few separate trips. Once I started looking at her calendar and everywhere she was going to be visiting, I decided she is pretty much becoming a celebrity! Between her recent title as Grand Marshal, along with my grandpa, for her hometown parade (Stop #1), as well as her jet-setting throughout the South (Stops #2, #3, and #4), I realized this was something we will all want to remember for a long time!
With past family trips/vacations, I have been known to create fun little items for everyone. My mom had a great idea that I should create t-shirts for my grandma, my mom, my sister and me, to honor this mini “tour” my grandma is on this summer. I started thinking about a “theme” and it immediately came to me…I should make shirts that look just like Concert Tour shirts and include all the dates/places my grandma would be visiting! So I hopped online, designed a shirt and ordered them. I titled my grandmother’s tour Pat O’Connor’s “Up All Night” Southern Summer Tour 2011 and listed out all the places she would be visiting along with the dates.
In case you would like to try to “spot” this local celebrity, here are/were her “tour dates”:
- July 4, 2011: Centerville, OH, Grand Marshal in Parade
- July 5-7, 2011: Southport, N.C., Family Visit
- July 8-12, 2011: Atlanta, GA, Family Visit
- August 20-27, 2011: Myrtle Beach, S.C. Family Vacation
This particular post highlights her adventures during Stop #3, to visit my mom, Travis and me in Atlanta, GA.
My mom and I drove to the airport to pick up my grandma on Friday, July 8th. When she hopped in the car, I had a welcome beach bag ready for her filled with lots of fun summer items including her new t-shirt, a fun visor, a water bottle, sun tan lotion and snacks. She loved it and even ate some CHEEZ-ITs right away for the ride home!
On Saturday, mom, me and grandma packed up a cooler with lunch and enjoyed an afternoon by the pool. After Travis returned home from work, we all went to dinner at Toasted & Tapped in Flowery Branch. We enjoyed a wonderful meal, fantastic service, and great conversation. And, our waitress told us she’s actually in grad school studying photography so I was extra excited to chat with her about lenses, batteries, my camera and my new business! She took a great photo of all of us too:
We wrapped up the weekend with a relaxing little cook-out at our place Sunday evening with Mom, her friend Sammy, me, Travis and grandma! We enjoyed hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill, cole slaw, baked beans, homemade backed mac n’ cheese, some wine, and strawberry short-cake for dessert (thanks mom!)! Our friends Chad and Christina Sweeting joined us too, along with their little 1-year-old baby, Brady, and we got some great photos of them as well.
On Monday, July 11, we will take grandma back to the airport and put her on a flight back to Ohio (and my guess is she will be wearing her tour t-shirt). We will then see her again soon in August, for Stop #4 on her “tour”, in Myrtle Beach, S.C.!
We had a wonderful visit with my grandma and I know she had a great time too! My favorite quote from her this weekend was when she said to me:
“Katey, I could never move down here, you know why? It’s TOO relaxing!!! I’ve never napped so much in my life!”
To my dearest grandmother…if there is one thing I learned since moving down South, it’s that everything moves a little slower, naps are an important part of every day, and there is NO such thing as being too relaxed!
Cheers to lazy summer afternoons, giggles with family, and cheers to my grandmother…who inspires me daily with her energy, sense of humor and shining personality! See you in Myrtle Beach gma!!!
